World number two Ons Jabeur looked disgruntled and uncomfortable in a surprisingly tight three-set victory over Tamara Zidansek on Tuesday but the Tunisian fought through with impressive grit in the end. The 28-year-old finished runner-up to Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon and Iga Swiatek at the US Open last year in a transformative season on tour that ended with her finally becoming the first Arab player to qualify for the WTA Finals. Jabeur also won her first Masters title at the Madrid Open in April as well as a third WTA title at the Berlin Open, her second on grass.
THE PREDICTION
World number 86 Marketa Vondrousova is a serious anomaly at her current ranking and she proved it on Tuesday with a comeback victory over Alison Riske-Amritraj. The former world number 14 burst onto the scene in 2019 when she finished runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros as a teenager but she is excellent across all surfaces, with her Silver Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games won in conditions like Melbourne. This is another very tough draw for Ons Jabeur once again, facing another player who has deep major experience after overcoming 2021 Roland-Garros semi-finalist Zidansek, as it took eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka to beat Vondrousova at Adelaide 1 two weeks ago. Jabeur has won each of their three tour-level meetings on tour but a three-set results at the Stuttgart Open last Spring looks a good marker for what may happen here.
