THE PREDICTION

World number eight Marketa Vondrousova snapped a seven-match losing streak with a choppy three-set victory over qualifier Greet Minnen on Monday. The 24-year-old stunned the tennis world with an incredible run to the Wimbledon title last summer, having done next to nothing on grass before, but after initially coping well on the hardcourt swing her game began to depreciate alongside a shoulder injury to see her form dissipate. It will be fascinating to see what the Czech can do here, and from here on in, after a confidence-boosting win but former number 11 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is a serious step-up in quality and she is well-rested after playing just three games before Marta Kostyuk was forced to retire from their match on Tuesday.

Current world number 32 Pavlyuchenkova has required top 20 quality to oust her so far this season but it is hard to quantify Vondrousova’s level as one of the more unpredictable players on tour at the best of times. Back Pavlyuchenkova to earn at least a set, despite trailing Vondrousova 0-2 in their head-to-head, to leave the victor up to chance.
