THE PREDICTION

World number four Maria Sakkari overcame Sloane Stephens in three entertaining sets on Wednesday in an encouraging return to a recognisable level. The 27-year-old’s last big victory came over Daria Kasatkina at the Berlin Open in June but she should visibly improve over the next few weeks on the North American hardcourt swing, with last season’s run to the semi-finals of the US Open a high benchmark. Former world number one Karolina Pliskova is another player who blew off the cobwebs on Wednesday, conceding just two games to in-form Amanda Anisimova in a blistering performance we have barely seen for the last 12 months. The 30-year-old lost to Camila Giorgi in last season’s Canada Masters final, her fourth defeat in a final on the spin since winning her 15th WTA title at the Brisbane International in 2020, but she remains one of the best on tour once she finds her rhythm.

Sakkari beat Pliskova in straight sets in the quarter-finals of last season’s US Open to take a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head but much of this result relies on what version of the Czech comes to court on Thursday. Back Pliskova to win at least a set here but leave this match well away from any accumulators.
