THE PREDICTION
World number 71 Marcos Giron has been playing better than his results suggest this season but this looks a tough opener against a potentially resurgent Cristian Garin. Former world number 17 Garin qualified without dropping a set this week in a continuation of the strong form that saw him reach the round of 16 at Indian Wells last week, beating two seeds in Yoshihito Nishioka and Casper Ruud en-route. The Chilean has struggled to find his consistent best for much of the last two seasons but qualifying so quickly after a strong run suggests he is entering a solid period. Garin beat Giron in four sets in the third round of Roland-Garros two years ago but the conditions probably just-about suit the American better here. Three sets seem likely and so taking that option on its own, or Garin to earn at least one of them inside an accumulator, looks reasonable here.
