26-year-old Andrey Rublev moved back up to world number six after claiming his second Masters title, and a second on clay, at the Madrid Open on Sunday. The Russian overcame illness and some woeful form coming into Madrid to stun defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals and he should be considered a serious threat here in Rome in the absence of both Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. World number 49 Marcos Giron came back from a set down to beat Emil Ruusuvuori, snapping a three-match losing streak on clay, but this looks far too steep of a challenge against Rublev’s usually rock-solid level against players ranked beneath him. Rublev reached the final of his next tournament after winning his first Masters title in Monte-Carlo last season and he can begin this promising campaign with a straight-sets victory.
