THE PREDICTION

26-year-old Donna Vekic is just one place behind her career-high WTA world ranking of 19th after a brilliant start to 2023 saw her first reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and then win her fourth WTA title at the Monterrey Open. The Croat lost in three sets to Lesia Tsurenko at this stage of Indian Wells last time out but it is always hard to move from a title through to an opener and she should be in much better shape for a run here in Miami. World number 86 Madison Brengle was in control of her match with Amanda Anisimova before the youngster retired late in the second set, handing Brengle one of the biggest wins of her career in terms of ranking. The 32-year-old has enjoyed some strong results over the last few weeks but she has failed to win back-to-back matches all season, including in defeat to Donna Vekic at the Linz Open last month. Vekic should be considered a dark horse for a deep run at least in Miami if she can get a foothold in the draw this time and she can backed to win in two here.
