This is an incredible opportunity for one of world number 65 Mackenzie McDonald or number 33 Yoshihito Nishioka to make a rare foray into the second week of a Grand Slam. 27-year-old McDonald did so here back in 2021 before defeat to Daniil Medvedev but it would be a first time for Nishioka, who came into Melbourne at a career-high of 33rd and in the form of his life after claiming a second ATP title at the Korea Open late last year. McDonald’s performance over defending champion Rafael Nadal has been somewhat swept under the carpet due to the Spaniard’s heart0breaking injury but the American was winning that match by merit in a continuation of the level that saw him oust a top player in Brandon Nakashima on Monday. 31st seed Nishioka is yet to drop a set in Melbourne and the tricky left-hander leads McDonald 3-1 in their head-to-head after beating the American at Adelaide 1 two weeks ago.
THE PREDICTION
There are so many factors to this potential thriller on Friday. Both players have excelled in matches they were underdogs in over five sets in recent years but McDonald is never better on tour than at a Slam. However, one of Nishioka’s three wins came in five sets at Roland-Garros in 2019 and the Japanese number one tends to maintain his positive win-records well. McDonald is coming off the win of his career but it might have felt a little hollow given the nature of its conclusion. Back Nishioka to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors and leave the winner up to chance.
