THE PREDICTION
Former world number 10 Lucas Pouille grabbed perhaps his best win since returning to tour from a an extended break last summer, beating Daniel Altmaier in straight sets to build on two comeback victories in qualifying. The 30-year-old has endured a tough journey through some serious mental health issues in recent years but a new approach to the rest of his career should eventually bear fruit if he can maintain fitness with a superb game for all surfaces.
World number 11 Stefanos Tsitsipas should have far too much for the Frenchman at this moment in time, though, as he confidently leads their head-to-head 3-0 with a straight-sets victory on one of each surface. 25-year-old Tsitsipas has been struggling to find anything like his best level for some time, recently dropping out of the top 10 for the first time this decade, and there is little sign of him returning to former glory soon after losing to Alex de Minaur in three sets at the Mexican Open – a first defeat to the Aussie in 11 meetings. A run to the semi-finals of the Paris Masters late last year promised a lot more than has been delivered this season but, realistically, the Greek should be coming through this opening match in straight sets.
