THE PREDICTION
World number 20 Francisco Cerundolo will begin the defence of his maiden ATP title claimed here last summer with a really tricky test against up-and-comer Luca Van Assche. 24-year-old Cerundolo recently claimed the second title of his career at the Eastbourne International in a run that looked to tire him out of the running at Wimbledon but he should be well rested ahead of this first encounter. 19-year-old Van Assche broke the top 70 on tour for the first time last month after reaching the second round of Roland-Garros but he struggled across the grass swing, taking just one tight win in Eastbourne. The Frenchman is at his best on clay and he could be the better starter here after beating Dragos Madaras in straight sets on Monday but Cerundolo has recent title success in his legs and something to defend here. Three sets seem likelier than two, though, so take the Argentine to win outright.
