THE PREDICTION
Former world number four Dominic Thiem was awarded a wildcard to the main draw at the Miami Open but the current world number 106 could probably have done with the extra matches in qualifying. The 29-year-old’s last title on tour was his most prestigious from the 2020 US Open but he has struggled to return to anywhere near his best level since wrist surgery in 2021. World number 59 Lorenzo Sonego is another player who is capable of far better than his ranking suggests but the Italian has been struggling for consistency for much of the past two seasons. The 27-year-old upset Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Dubai Tennis Championships at the start of the month but lost in the first round of Indian Wells to Jason Kubler without much fuss. Both Thiem and Sonego are about as capable of blasting through here as stuttering to defeat and their 1-1 head-to-head record means little as things stand. Thiem takes a poor four-match losing streak into this match but he came close to snapping that in the desert so back Sonego to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
