THE LOWDOWN
20-year-old Lorenzo Musetti is the highest-ranked player at the Next Gen ATP Finals at a career-high 23rd after his excellent run to the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters last week. The Italian looked the pre-tournament favourite and set to blast through the group stages after a straight-sets victory over Chun-hsin Tseng on Tuesday but a five-set thriller with Dominic Stricker saw him on the wrong side of five tiebreaks on Wednesday. Musetti is one of just two players in Milan with an ATP title to his name after claiming his first two this season at the Hamburg Open and more recent Napoli Cup.
World number 41 Jack Draper came back from a three-set defeat to surprise package Dominic Stricker on Tuesday with a four-set victory over Chun-hsin Tseng yesterday but that dropped set could cost him here. The 20-year-old has enjoyed an incredible season on tour after first breaking through last summer, with a huge run to the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International and the quarter-finals of the Canada Masters promising plenty ahead in 2023.
THE PREDICTION
This is straight-up shoot-out for the last remaining semi-final spot from this group as Dominic Stricker sailed through and Chun-hsin Tseng crashed out on Wednesday. Draper and Musetti have met once on court as juniors at Wimbledon back in 2018, where the Brit came back from a set down to win, but this will be a clean slate and first tour-level match four years on. Losing to Dominic Stricker was not in the script for home favourite Musetti but he will have the benefit of a partisan atmosphere from his home fans in Milan here and he has enjoyed the better form of the two in recent times. This should be a thriller if Draper can bring his best to this crunch match but with planet of factors pulling in Musetti’s favour, back the Italian to edge this outright.
