20-year-old Lorenzo Musetti really came into his own this summer, beating Carlos Alcaraz to the Hamburg Open title and then totally revamping his game on hardcourts to end 2022 in the form of his career. The Italian will be the firm favourite here in Milan and the highest-ranked player as he comes in on a career-high ATP world ranking of 23rd from his run to the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters last week. Musetti claimed the second ATP title of his career at the Napoli Cup and he has beaten the likes of Matteo Berrettini, Marin Cilic and Casper Ruud in recent weeks.
21-year-old Chun-hsin Tseng set a career-high ATP world ranking of 83rd this August after a strong summer on the challenger circuit. The current world number 90 takes a fairly unconvincing 5-8 record into the Next Gen Finals and just two top 100 victories at tour level in 2022 suggest he may struggle this week.
THE PREDICTION
With Holger Rune breaking the top 10 and pulling out of the Next Gen Finals, something of a power move, world number 23 Lorenzo Musetti will be eager to make a big statement this week in Milan. The home hopeful is one of the favourites here alongside Jack Draper and Brandon Nakashima in an otherwise inexperienced field and after an incredible week in Paris he looks well capable of taking this opener in straight sets.
