THE PREDICTION
World number 22 Liudmila Samsonova made full use of her under par opponent in a straight-sets victory over Petra Kvitova on Monday. The 24-year-old won three of her four WTA titles in quick succession this time last season but she failed to defend each of them, with an exit in the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Open last week her last opportunity to do so. Samsonova remains a serious threat in these conditions but world number 44 Marta Kostyuk comes in hot from claiming her second top 10 victory in as many months with a straight-sets result over Ningbo champion Ons Jabeur. The Ukrainian came back from a set down to oust Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first round to look competitive here in Beijing but Samsonova leads their head-to-head 3-0 after a straight-sets victory at the Washington Open in August – immediately after Kostyuk claimed her first top 10 result over Caroline Garcia. All that suggests backing Samsonova to make the quarter-finals is the reasonable call here but three sets are about as likely as two against the ever-improving Kostyuk.
