World number 33 Leylah Fernandez came back from a set down to oust Anastasia Potapova in an impressive display of the Canadian’s fighting spirit. The 21-year-old famously reached the US Open final in 2021 with similar moxie but she has struggled to develop consistent form over the past few seasons, despite an excellent end to last year seeing her win the Hong Kong Open before carrying her nation through to their first Billie Jean King Cup triumph.
World number 19 Liudmila Samsonova grabbed an even bigger result, though, with a stunning three-set victory over former number two Barbora Krejcikova in her best result on clay so far in what has been a largely frustrating season.
Both players would prefer to play this quality last 16 clash on their favoured hardcourts but Fernandez has shown a better affinity with this surface in recent years and she beat the Russian in straight sets at the Qatar Masters back in February to level their head-to-head 1-1. Back the Canadian to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
