World number 12 Garbine Muguruza has endured the worst year of her career so far in 2022 but there have been some small signs of encouragement in recent weeks. The 28-year-old has needed top-level players to oust her from her last three tournaments, including an absolute classic three-set tussle with Petra Kvitova in the third round of the US Open, and she got her Tokyo Open campaign underway with a solid win over Despina Papamichail. However, world number 30 Liudmila Samsonova is in serious top 20 form right now, with back-to-back straight-set victories in Tokyo over Xinyu Wang and Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. The 23-year-old won back-to-back titles on hardcourts last month and reached the round of 16 at the US Open before slipping up against Ajla Tomljanovic. Former world number one Muguruza beat Samsonova in straight sets in their only previous meeting in January last season but the Russian is a totally different prospect now. It would be a huge achievement for the Spaniard to beat Samsonova here but it is likelier that the Russian edges through.
