23-year-old Marketa Vondrousova is an excellent player as a former world number 14 and Roland-Garros finalist but her three-set upset over second seed Ons Jabeur on Thursday was still a huge upset. The current world number 86 is fast-tracking a return from injury she suffered after a defeat to Jabeur at the Stuttgart Open last April, with her first tour-level tournament back an impressive run to the quarter-finals at Adelaide 1 two weeks ago before defeat to the eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. It is testament to 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova’s incredible rise over the last few months that she is the higher-ranked Czech in this interesting third round clash but this is a significantly tougher test than her first two wins over Australian wildcards. Fruhvirtova is a clear rising star of the near future, and already a WTA titlist after last season’s success in Chennai, but back Vondrousova to win outright here, probably in two.
