World number 29 Veronika Kudermetova could be one to watch in the earlier rounds at Roland-Garros with some of her best results coming this season on tour. The 25-year-old finished runner-up to Simona Halep at Melbourne 1 at the start of the season, to Jelena Ostapenko at the Dubai Tennis Championships back in February and more recently to Anastasia Potapova at the Istanbul Open on clay. Kudermetova did win the Italian Open Women’s Doubles last time out alongside Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and that is excellent clay-court form coming into a winnable opener against Chinese qualifier Lin Zhu. The 28-year-old did not drop a set in qualifying and Kudermetova was stunned by Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the singles in Rome, suggesting backing the Russian to win outright is sensible.
