29-year-old Lin Zhu is the fifth seed at the Monterrey Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 41st and she settled into the campaign with a straight-sets victory over Anna Bondar. The Chinese reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open back in January with two stunning wins over Jil Teichmann and Maria Sakkari and she took that form into the Hua Hin Championships to claim her maiden WTA title. Lin Zhu’s first conquest in Melbourne was world number 74 Rebecca Marino, whom she beat in straight sets in the first round, and she beat the Canadian to win a Challenger title here in Mexico almost exactly a year ago. 32-year-old Marino is a proper battler capable of taking this match to three sets and beyond after a win in two tiebreaks over Fernanda Contreras on Tuesday but Lin Zhu can be backed to come through the outright winner here.
