World number six Maria Sakkari came back from a set down to beat sudden rising star Diana Shnaider on Wednesday, ultimately playing well in a tougher-than-it-looked clash. The 27-year-old finished runner-up at two Masters events last season, to Iga Swiatek at Indian Wells and Jessica Pegula in Guadalajara, and she performed well at the WTA Finals at the end of the year before losing in the semi-finals to eventual champion Caroline Garcia.
THE PREDICTION
World number 87 Lin Zhu stunned 32nd seed Jil Teichmann in comfortable straight sets on Wednesday to back-up a solid opener over Rebecca Marino. The 28-year-old began picking up more and more results towards the end of last season before a decent start in Auckland two weeks ago saw a quarter-final exit to eventual champion Coco Gauff. Sakkari’s strong form does not mean the Greek is nailed on to win in straight sets as a player who often takes the hard route through to a win but she can be backed to win outright here.
