THE PREDICTION

World number 81 Leylah Fernandez set a career-high WTA world ranking of 13th after finishing runner-up to Emma Raducanu at that miraculous US Open in 2021 but the Canadian has struggled to find that intensity practically ever since. The 20-year-old played well and was beaten just as well by Maria Sakkari at the Washington Open last week but there is so much more potential bubbling under the surface. Perhaps a home tournament will help Fernandez rediscover her best but this is no gimme against world number 57 Peyton Stearns, who upset the Canadian in three sets at the Rabat Open back in May. Stearns set a career-high WTA world ranking of 55th after reaching the third round of Roland-Garros in June but she has struggled a little since coming back onto hardcourts. Ultimately this is a difficult match to call but take Montreal native Fernandez to earn at least a set backed by a partisan crowd and watch this space, however tentatively.
