Both world number 60 Leylah Fernandez and number 88 Linda Fruhvirtova knocked out 16-year-old Russians on Thursday, with Fernandez coming back from a set down to beat Mirra Andreeva and Fruhvirtova ousting Alina Korneeva. 21-year-old Fernandez dropped the first set of her Hong Kong Open campaign to top seed Victoria Azarenka on Tuesday but she took the second before Azarenka was forced to retire. 18-year-old Fruhvirtova also came back from a set down to beat a seed in Peyton Stearns to suggest this could be a thrilling battle for the semi-finals in a tournament full of young talent. Former number 13 Fernandez has the better experience at this level but Fruhvirtova is coming back from a poor spell over the summer to bring some momentum into this first encounter.
