THE PREDICTION

World number 49 Leylah Fernandez struggled to impose herself on the tour for much of last season, due in no small part to a serious foot injury, but she played well at Indian Wells to reach the round of 16. The Canadian has needed top quality competition to knock her out of her last four tournaments to suggest this should be a reasonably comfortable first meeting with Emma Navarro on Saturday but 21-year-old Navarro will be buzzing after coming back from a set down to beat Caty McNally on Thursday. Navarro will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 120th after the feat, the most prestigious win of her career so far, and it would not be a total surprise to see her ride that wave into a third set here. The suitably cautious move is taking Fernandez to win outright, although two sets should realistically do it.
