THE PREDICTION

19-year-old Leylah Fernandez played well on her return from injury but a straight-sets defeat to Beatriz Haddad-Maia in the second round of the Canada Masters was a tough draw. The Canadian will be a fascinating player to follow over August as she gears up for another tilt at the US Open final, with last year’s runner-up finish saw superb victories over Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber and Aryna Sabalenka amongst other big names. 27-year-old Ekaterina Alexandrova is playing her first match on tour in almost two months since losing to Daria Kasatkina in three sets at the Berlin Open. The Russian set a career-high WTA world ranking of 25th back in 2020 but she has found some excellent form this season to win a second title at ‘s-Hertogenbosch and get within touching distance of breaking that personal record. Two months away should see some rustiness but the Russian will be a serious challenge for Fernandez. Back the Canadian to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
