THE PREDICTION
This promises to be another thrilling battle on court between world number nine Belinda Bencic and number 53 Leylah Fernandez with their head-to-head finely poised at two wins apiece. The Canadian won their first two encounters, most recently last summer in three sets to reach the round of 16 at Roland-Garros, but Bencic has since levelled things with another three-set epic at the Guadalajara Masters before a more straightforward win at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, where she helped Switzerland to the title. After a searing start to 2023 saw the 25-year-old win two WTA titles in Adelaide and Abu Dhabi she now takes a two-match losing streak into the second round in Miami perhaps due to some fatigue and that makes this a tough call. 20-year-old Fernandez is far better than her current ranking suggests but she will need to tighten up a fair bit to beat Bencic after ousting Lesia Tsurenko by six breaks to four in a topsy-turvy straight-sets result on Wednesday.
A lot of this match relies heavily on how fit Bencic is to compete with one of the best scrappers on tour and that makes taking Fernandez to win at least a set look the shrewd way to avoid picking a winner here.
