THE PREDICTION

Former world number 13 Leylah Fernandez is enjoying an eye-catching week so far in Hong Kong. The current world number 60 came back from a set down against top seed Victoria Azarenka in the first round before a vastly impressive victory over fellow youngster Mirra Andreeva and she backed that up against another contemporary in 18-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova on Friday. Fernandez has spent much of the past two seasons desperately searching for anything like best tennis but she looks to be improving, finally, ahead of this clash with Anna Blinkova, who beat her in straight sets at the Bad Homburg Open in June. World number 37 Blinkova won her maiden WTA title this time last season and she finished runner-up to Elina Svitolina in Strasbourg in May before falling away for a few months. A straight-sets victory over Sara Sorribes Tormo on Friday makes her very competitive here but Fernandez has the higher ceiling and a modicum of confidence returning. Back the Canadian to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
