29-year-old Lin Zhu set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd this week after reaching the semi-finals of the Monterrey Open last week, where she lost in straight sets to eventual champion Donna Vekic. The Chinese has been around for a while on tour but 2023 is already by far her most successful season after an incredible run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open saw her stun back-to-back seeds in Jil Teichmann and Maria Sakkari before taking that form into a maiden WTA title at the Hua Hin Championships – where she beat Lesia Tsurenko in straight sets. World number 95 Tsurenko has been playing better tennis than her current ranking suggests over the last nine or so months and she took their first meeting in three sets back in 2019 to see a finely-poised head-to-head record at 1-1 ahead of this intriguing opener. The 33-year-old beat two good players to qualify for the first round at Indian Wells but Lin Zhu remains the favourite given their match last month. Back the Chinese to win outright here or take at least a set inside an accumulator.
