World number 113 Laura Siegemund came back from a set down to stun China Open runner-up Liudmila Samsonova on Thursday, backing-up a solid opener over Lin Zhu. The 35-year-old has enjoyed a strong season overall, harking back to her days as a top 30 player, but the vast majority of her wins are claimed on the doubles circuit these days as the current world number 12 in that format. 27-year-old Jasmine Paolini came into Zhengzhou at a career-high WTA world ranking of 31st after a strong run to the round of 16 at the China Open, where she stunned 15th seed Beatriz Haddad-Maia in three sets before a competitive exit to Aryna Sabalenka. The Italian came back from a set down to upset world number 10 Caroline Garcia in a not wholly surprising result given her recent form and, despite Siegemund’s shock win, she has to be considered the favourite between two renowned scrappers here. Back Paolini to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance or consider a one-off on the match to see three sets.
