World number four Caroline Garcia played well to beat one of the best scrappers on tour, Leylah Fernandez, in straight sets on Thursday. The 29-year-old won a WTA title on all three surfaces after bursting into form last summer, including a Masters title in Cincinnati, before finishing 2022 off as a US Open semi-finalist for the first time and the WTA Finals champion. Garcia has only reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open once before in singles but she should be considered one of the outright title contenders this time around in Melbourne.

World number 158 Laura Siegemund came back from a set down to upset 27th seed Irina-Camelia Begu on Thursday, her second comeback from a set down this tournament. The German veteran is well known for her battling capabilities and she is always a threat on tour as a former top 30 player, although her best tennis often comes on the clay. Garcia beat Siegemund in straight sets on clay at Roland-Garros back in 2021 and hardcourt conditions should favour her heavily in her current form. Back the Frenchwoman to win outright despite Siegemund’s results so far.
