Former world number four Sofia Kenin came back from a set down to beat Katie Volynets at the San Diego Open last September, where she reached one of back-to-back semi-finals to look like finally turning a corner. The 25-year-old has been struggling to find anything like her previous level, with which she won the Australian Open and finished runner-up at Roland-Garros in 2020, and a five-match losing streak coming into Miami says she has receded after some encouraging progress last season.
World number 121 Katie Volynets qualified the hard way this weekend to bring some momentum into this rematch and she stunned both Mira Andreeva and Ons Jabeur at Indian Wells before an equally impressive three-set exit to Caroline Wozniacki. Matches involving Kenin are always a tricky call as the once fearsome American is capable of bursting back at a moment’s notice but take in-form Volynets to earn at least a set as the likelier victor this time around.
