The American up-and-comer grabbed the best win of her career at the Australian Open back in January with a three-set result over ninth seed Veronika Kudermetova and she could enjoy a strong run on home soil as a California native if she navigates past this tough opener. World number 41 Shelby Rogers finished runner-up to Daria Kasatkina at the San Jose Open late last season and she has impressed in parts of 2023, particularly in wins over Anett Kontaveit and Leylah Fernandez at last month’s Abu Dhabi Open. Volynets beat Rogers in their only previous encounter at the Acapulco Open back in 2020 but despite her strong recent form it still feels like Rogers’ match to lose here.
