THE PREDICTION

World number 135 Katie Volynets grabbed an excellent three-set victory over Viktorija Golubic on Monday for a first Grand Slam victory. The 20-year-old has enjoyed some success on the ITF circuit this season but the step-up to face 16th-seed Elena Rybakina in the second round will likely be far too steep at this stage of her young career. 22-year-old Rybakina is considerably more experienced and she famously beat Serena Williams in the round of 16 here last season on her way to a quarter-final exit. The world number 16 needed three sets to oust Arantxa Rus on Monday but she should be the better for it moving forwards and she has needed real quality on clay to beat her in recent tournaments. Her choppy opener suggests backing Rybakina to win outright is the sensible move here but the Kazakh should be able to take this in two.
