2017 Roland-Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko rarely does things the easy way but she handed Anna Bondar a third-set bagel on Wednesday after dropping the second in a tighter match than it should have been. The 25-year-old lost her Women’s Doubles opener as the fifth seed alongside Lyudmyla Kichenok on Thursday to take one less distraction away but she has entered all three draws in Melbourne in the search for better form. This looks a real potential upset on Friday against world number 95 Kateryna Baindl, who has fought well so far to beat Kamilla Rakhimova and Caty McNally. The Ukrainian is through to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time and she can take some confidence from a 2-0 head-to-head record over Ostapenko at tour level, despite their last encounter coming way back in 2018 when she upset the defending champion in the first round of Roland-Garros. Leave this head-scratcher out of an accumulator but then consider backing Baindl to earn at least a set here even if Ostapenko remains the fair favourite to eventually come through.
