THE PREDICTION

World number three Coco Gauff reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open before a straight-sets defeat to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka, whom she beat from a set down to win her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open last summer. The 19-year-old barely found her best tennis at all in Melbourne but her newfound ability to win ugly, since bursting into world-beating form last August, is the stuff of champions and she should be considered a serious contender this week in Doha. World number 41 Katerina Siniakova grabbed an excellent opening upset over Donna Vekic on Sunday but the Czech should struggle to build on it in this tough match-up. The 27-year-old knows all about Gauff’s game from their myriad meetings in doubles but she also trails the American 5-1 in their head-to-head, losing each of their last two encounters in straight sets. Given her momentum and Gauff’s lack of recent matches, taking the second seed to win outright is the suitably cautious concession.

TIP: COCO GAUFF TO WIN
