World number 17 Karolina Pliskova beat a fellow former number one in Venus Williams on Tuesday, ousting the 42-year-old in straight sets. 30-year-old Pliskova has spent much of 2022 trying to regain a modicum of form after an injury saw her miss the opening few months but she suddenly sprung into life at the Canada Masters last week to beat the likes of Amanda Anisimova, Maria Sakkari and Barbora Krejcikova on her way to the semi-finals. World number 33 Elise Mertens conceded just two games to Anhelina Kalinina on Tuesday in a welcome return to the kind of level she is capable of too but the Belgian has lost to Pliskova in both of their previous meetings and she looks to have missed the opportunity to amend that here. Their previous meeting fell in three sets in the quarter-finals of the Italian Open back in 2020 and given Mertens’ blistering start in Cincinnati the sensible call looks like backing Pliskova to win outright here.
