THE LOWDOWN

KAROLINA MUCHOVA

World number 67 Karolina Muchova is on the long road back to the top 20 after a long injury lay-off stretching back from last season’s US Open to March this year. The 25-year-old got going slowly on Thursday to come back from a set down against Chinese youngster Qinwen Zheng and she is probably her least effective on the clay. Muchova is yet to lose since her return to the tour this season with two wins at the Miami Open last month before she pulled out of the tournament with fatigue.

BELINDA BENCIC

World number 13 Belinda Bencic confirmed her status as a Madrid Open title contender with an assured straight-sets victory over Irina-Camelia Begu on Thursday,. The 25-year-old won the fifth WTA title of her career at the Charleston Open on clay earlier this month in form transferred straight over from reaching the semi-finals of the Miami Open before a loss to Naomi Osaka. Bencic won two Gold Medals at last season’s Tokyo Olympic Games in the Women’s Singles and also the Women’s Doubles alongside Viktorija Golubic, with whom she is playing here in Madrid.

THE PREDICTION

Bencic was the winner of their only previous encounter as Muchova was forced to retire from the second set of their match at the Cincinnati Open. The Czech was struggling with injuries she soon took time off the tour for back then but it is hard to see her levelling their head-to-head record here with Bencic in this form, especially on the clay. Bencic should take some serious stopping with her momentum firmly back on after a long period of inconsistency and she can be backed to outlast the still returning Muchova with an outright win.
