24-year-old Frances Tiafoe came into Melbourne at a career-high ranking of 17th in the world after enjoying his best season yet in 2023, the culmination of which saw him just lose out to Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals of the US Open in five sets. The American won all five of his United Cup matches as a brilliant anchor, as well as aiding in the doubles when required to help the US to the inaugural title. Wins over Daniel Altmaier and Juncheng Shang so far at the Australian Open see him take a seven-match winning streak into this enticing third round clash with world number 20 Karen Khachanov, who overcame in-form Jason Kubler in four sets on Wednesday.
