THE LOWDOWN

KAIA KANEPI

Former world number 15 Kaia Kanepi beat an out-of-sorts Angelique Kerber on Tuesday for an early shock in the draw and she backed that up with an assured straight-sets win over Marie Bouzkova on Thursday. The 36-year-old won the last of her four career WTA titles in Brussels back in 2013, with the last of her six quarter-final exits at Grand Slams coming at the US Open in 2017.

MADDISON INGLIS

Aussie wildcard Maddison Inglis shocked Leylah Fernandez in the first round of the Australian open but her three-set victory over Hailey Baptiste was perhaps the more impressive given the occasion. The 24-year-old clearly loved her time on the Margaret Court Arena and she has been rewarded with a perhaps once in a lifetime chance to play on Rod Laver on Saturday. Inglis had never previously won a Grand Slam match.

THE PREDICTION

For the third time this week Maddison Inglis is playing the biggest match of her career but it will feel all the more special on Rod Laver Arena backed by as many Australian they can physically allow in to pull her over the finish line. The vastly experienced Kaia Kanepi is the favourite here on all counts: form, performances, guile but the crowd will do their utmost to drag a beloved underdog over the line and that makes taking Inglis to win at least a set a perhaps sentimental pick here. The unsentimental option is for Kanepi to win outright but leaving the winner up to chance looks a wise move here.
