Former world number six Gael Monfils comes into Indian Wells on a protected ranking as current world number 210. The 36-year-old is making his first appearance on tour since last August as he spent time away with his new-born daughter with wife and fellow player Elina Svitolina and anything could happen here as a result. World number 87 Jordan Thompson won a Challenger event on US soil two weeks ago but the Aussie has just one tour-level win for the season so far. This is, surprisingly, the first meeting between Thompson and Monfils but both players enjoy a show and three sets seem likely here – particularly as Monfils could be feeling equal parts fresh as rusty.
