THE PREDICTION

World number 39 John Isner claimed his most prestigious of 16 ATP titles around this time five years ago at the 2018 Miami Masters and 14 of those 16 trophies were lifted on US soil. The 37-year-old reached the Dallas Open final last month before a three-set upset against an impressive Yibing Wu but that run with very little form to speak of was testament once again to the much-loved veteran’s abilities at home. Isner beat world number 48 Brandon Nakashima to win his most recent ATP title at the Atlanta Open in 2021 but Nakashima leads their head-to-head record 2-1 with wins either side of that final in Los Cabos and at the US Open that season. 21-year-old Nakashima ended last season as the Next Gen ATP Finals champion but he has struggled to find that intensity early on this year. Juts one win to his name suggests Isner can squeak through here but the pair have played three tiebreaks amongst their eight sets so far to leave a suitable combination here. Back Isner to earn at least a set and for at least one tiebreak in the match to leave the victor up to chance.
