The 31-year-old has endured a woeful past 12 months on tour to come into Shanghai ranked 130th but there could be shoots of renewal for the Argentine, whose potential return to form would be hugely welcome as one of the most popular players on tour. World number 30 Jiri Lehecka looks too strong in these conditions to suffer Van Assche’s fate in this first encounter with Schwartzman but a shock exit to Hamad Medjedovic at the Astana Open last weekend certainly leaves the door ajar for an upset. The Czech has lost two of his three matches on tour since finishing runner-up to Sebastian Baez at Winston-Salem and that defeat could inspire another diminutive Argentine here.
