THE PREDICTION
Former world number 12 Borna Coric reached the quarter-finals of the US Open back in 2020 but the Croat missed more than a year from the tour after undergoing surgery, hampering his promising career. The 26-year-old won the ATP’s ‘Comeback of the Year’ award last season after making a more-than successful return in the summer, culminating in a career-best title won at the Cincinnati Masters in August at the hands of Stefanos Tsitsipas. Coric lost to Tsitsipas at the United Cup last week in a tight three-setter that suggests he will be a tough man to stop in Melbourne but world number 78 Jiri Lehecka is better than his current ranking belies. The 21-year-old finished runner-up to Brandon Nakashima at the Next Gen ATP Finals late last year and he took Cam Norrie to three tight sets this week in Auckland. A first meeting between the two is likely to go Coric’s way but four sets would not be a surprise after Lehecka troubled Grigor Dimitrov here last season. Take Coric to win outright.
