THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Jil Teichmann set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 21st this week after a strong season overall in 2022, especially on clay on which she reached the Madrid Masters semi-finals and the second week at Roland-Garros. However, the Swiss will plummet a fair few places on Monday as she returns to the Cincinnati Masters and loses the huge amount of ranking points she won here last season with a shock run ending in defeat to Ash Barty. Former world number two Petra Kvitova recently won the 29-th WTA title of her illustrious career at the Eastbourne International but the Czech was knocked out early by Alison Riske at the Canada Masters this week. The world number 23 could be a title contender if she can transfer her grass form to hard but Teichmann is a bolshy player who will very much count herself as the reigning champion by default, with Ash Barty retired. The Swiss leads Kvitova 2-1 in their head-to-head after a straight-sets victory in Madrid in May and backing her to win at least a set looks the sensible way to lean in this high quality opener.
