World number 33 Jil Teichmann could be a real dark horse at the Australian Open after ending last season in high spirits as part of Switzerland’s Billie Jean King Cup winning side. The 25-year-old is at her best on clay but a shock run to the Cincinnati Masters final in 2021, ended by Ash Barty, is proof of what she can do when in the right mood. This is no gimme, though, against world number 96 Harriet Dart as the 26-year-old continues to enjoy an upwards curve in her career. Not to be outdone on the international stage, Dart stunned Paula Badosa and Ajla Tomljanovic at the BJK Cup last November when representing Great Britain and she so very nearly beat former world number two Badosa again last week at the United Cup in a tight three-set defeat. Dart has also beaten the likes of Daria Kasatkina, Elina Svitolina and Kaia Kanepi within the last 12 months as well as a certain Jil Teichmann, who lost to the Brit in three sets on grass at the Eastbourne International in June.
Teichmann will be eager to level their head-to-head record at 1-1 with a win here and backing her to earn at least a set on equal-footing in hardcourt conditions looks a suitably cautious move.
