THE LOWDOWN

JESSICA PEGULA

28-year-old Jessica Pegula will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 11th by reaching the final o the Madrid Open via a straight-sets victory over Jil Teichmann. The American is through to her first Masters final after coming so close at the Miami Open last month, where she lost to eventual champion Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals. Pegula reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the second year running back in January before losing to eventual champion Ash Barty.

ONS JABEUR

World number 10 Ons Jabeur was assured in a straight-sets victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova on Thursday, impressively overturning a huge deficit in her head-to-head with the Russian. Jabeur is through to her first Masters final and she can match her career-high WTA world ranking of seventh if she wins on Saturday. The Tunisian won her first WTA title last season at the Birmingham Classic on grass but she possesses a quality game for all surfaces, with one of her best ever performances coming in the quarter-finals with a straight-sets victory over Simona Halep.

THE PREDICTION

There will be a new Masters champion on Saturday afternoon no matter who wins here between two in-form battlers in Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula. This match should be of the highest quality and intensity between two players who never know when they are beaten with a finely poised 2-2 head-to-head record adding to the occasion. World number 14 Pegula has taken out the likes of Bianca Andreescu en-route to the final but world number 10 Jabeur has certainly endured the tougher draw with victories over in-form Belinda Bencic and Simona Halep making her look the slight favourite here. The Tunisian has the more complete game for clay but the high altitude in Madrid has been aiding hard-hitting Pegula and could level things out here between two of the more powerful players on tour. Jabeur has won the two most recent encounters including in straight sets this season at the Dubai Tennis Championships and she can be backed to edge this as the outright winner in their first ever meeting on clay.
