THE LOWDOWN

World number two Carlos Alcaraz produced one of the tennis moments of this century, if not all-time, when he overcame four-time defending Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic in five thrilling sets to lift his second major trophy last summer. The 20-year-old had shown little affinity for grass before a steep learning curve saw him win Queen’s in June but after such an incredible summer the Spaniard struggled to find his best tennis across the late hardcourt swing, losing to Djokovic in three pulsating sets at the Cincinnati Masters and again in straight sets in the semi-finals of the ATP Finals. Alcaraz comes into Melbourne without a competitive match under his belt in 2024 and he missed last season’s edition entirely through injury, making him more of a serious dark horse than an outright title contender at this early stage.

PREDICTION

Carlos Alcaraz beat former world number seven Richard Gasquet to win his maiden ATP title at the Umag Open in 2021 and this will be an intriguing rematch 12 titles later. World number 76 Gasquet will turn 38 this June but he won the 16th ATP title of a long and illustrious career this time last season at the Auckland Classic, although a limp exit this week suggests the end is near. The Frenchman will enjoy some respectful support as a seasoned and popular veteran of the sport but Alcaraz should be able to play his way into form in a straight-sets victory.

TIP: CARLOS ALCARAZ TO WIN 3-0
