THE PREDICTION

World number four Jessica Pegula came back from a set down to beat Anna Blinkova in a choppy start to her China Open campaign, although she ultimately came through comfortably after going a tiebreak down. The 29-year-old finished runner-up to Veronika Kudermetova at the Tokyo Open on Sunday after a strong week but she is still a little off the pace that saw her claim a second Masters title in Montreal back in August. World number 17 Jelena Ostapenko came back from a set down to beat Eva Lys on Sunday before enjoying an extra day’s rest when Linda Noskova was forced to withdraw from their second round fixture. The 26-year-old has seen an inordinate amount of three-set matches in recent months and it would not be a surprise to see another here after Pegula shaved their match at the Qatar Open in three sets back in February. Pegula looks the favourite to come through, making backing the American to take at least a set the sensible call, but you could consider a one off on this match to need a decider.
