THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Jessica Pegula is the defending Citi Open champion from way back in 2019 and she comes in as the American number one at her career-high WTA world ranking of seventh after her best season yet on tour. Pegula would probably have more than just the one WTA title by now if she had not run into world number one Iga Swiatek twice already this season, with defeats to the Pole in the semi-finals of the Miami Open and quarter-finals at Roland-Garros complementing a runners-up medal at the Madrid Open where she lost in three to Ons Jabeur. Daria Saville was ranked outside the top 400 at the start of the year but the former world number 20 has put in some solid work to get back up to 88th. The 28-year-old came back from a set down to beat Mirjam Bjorkland on Monday and whilst she should be in better shape for this first meeting with Pegula it would be a surprise to see an upset here. Back the American to win outright, although straight sets should do it.
