World number 98 Claire Liu came back from a set down to beat Arantxa Rus, who had to retire injured in the third set, to back-up a solid opener over Yeon Woo Ku. The 23-year-old is capable of much better tennis than her current ranking suggests but a first meeting with Pegula, in conditions that heavily suit the elder American, should be too steep of a challenge.
