JESSICA PEGULA
28-year-old Jessica Pegula came into Melbourne at a career-high WTA world ranking of third after hard work over the last few seasons paid off with a first Masters title claimed in Guadalajara last October. Pegula made her debut at the WTA Finals in singles and doubles in November before her season caught up with her but she takes a seven-match winning streak from winning the United Cup with the USA two weeks ago into the round of 16 after a blistering performance against in-form Marta Kostyuk on Friday. The American has reached the quarter-finals in each of her last two seasons in Melbourne.
BARBORA KREJCIKOVA
World number 23 Barbora Krejcikova is yet to drop a set at the Australian Open as she continues to ply her trade under the radar. The Czech is the defending Women’s Doubles champion here in Melbourne as part of her well-decorated partnership with fellow Czech Katerina Siniakova but she burst into singles form back in 2021 with an incredible title-winning campaign at Roland-Garros. After suffering with an elbow injury for much of 2022, Krejcikova ended the season by winning her fourth and fifth titles at the Tallinn Open and Ostrava Open.
THE PREDICTION
Barbora Krejcikova may always be a little underrated on tour after starting out as a hugely successful doubles player but she should not be underestimated here. A first meeting with Jessica Pegula should be initially tricky for both players, particularly as Krejcikova is playing herself back into better form with each passing round, but Pegula’s focus is her superpower and she will be the last to assume anything ahead of this clash. Marta Kostyuk was playing exceptionally well in Melbourne but she took just two games from the American, who seems to have improved yet again since late last year. The United Cup may well have provided that extra lift for the world number three, where she beat world number one Iga Swiatek comfortably to look the Pole’s main competitor this fortnight. Back Pegula to win outright.
