THE PREDICTION

World number 77 Emma Raducanu put in her most convincing performance for months, perhaps this season, on Friday with a straight-sets victory over Magda Linette. The 19-year-old is through to the first regular tour semi-final of her career, not including her miraculous Grand Slam-winning campaign at the US Open last season, in a hugely encouraging sign of things to come once she regains control of her fluctuating fitness. This looks like a proper thriller against former world number five Jelena Ostapenko, who shares some similarities with the Brit as she too won her first WTA title at a Grand Slam – just turning 20 years old when she stormed to the Roland-Garros title in 2017. 25-year-old Ostapenko conceded just three games to up-and-coming 17-year-old Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva on Friday in an altogether more convincing match to her first two in Seoul and she is a former champion here after claiming her second WTA title at the Korea Open back in 2017.

Ostapenko is till far from her best level but Raducanu has never lost at this stage of a tournament before, from an admittedly small sample, and her champions’ instincts look to be kicking in the deeper she goes in the draw. Back Ostapenko to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable finalists.
